Last year I had another plane with a GTX 345, ABS-B with Mode S Transponder and a GDL-39 with I-Pad (and IPilot) which provided ADS-B Traffic.

A nice feature of Garmin I-Pilot, is that the Tail Number Registration of many participating aircraft, is displayed along with the other pertinent data (speed, relative altitude, etc).

I could typically identify target aircraft from the group that I regularly fly with, and see their Tail Number(s) displayed.

This past October, I purchased another aircraft (also an F33A) which has an installed GDL 88, a Garmin GTN 750 along with a King KT 76A transponder (modes A & C only). I also transferred the GDL-39 and IPilot/IPad for additional traffic display (no Flightstream for the GTN 750 yet).

On the earlier GTX 345 equipped aircraft, the GDL 39 Antenna was connected to a remote (former DME) Antenna.

As yet, the current/new aircraft relies only on the GDL 39’s attached stick antenna.

PROBLEM: The Tail Number (of my friends planes) is not being displayed as it had been on my earlier F33A aircraft that had the GTX 345 ADS-B/Mode S transponder.

NOTE: I am still seeing other aircraft Tail Number Registrations being displayed on the IPilot/IPad, but NO LONGER seeing my friends planes Tail Numbers the way it used to be with my earlier GTX 345 equipped aircraft.

My friends planes do show up, but only as unidentified target aircraft.

What would explain this difference? Is it that I no longer have a Mode S transponder? GDL 39 not connected to a remote (Former DME) antenna? Something else?

Thanks

Could it be something about your friend's equipment rather than yours? Especially if you're seeing the tails of other aircraft.

THanks Ron.

I had considered that too. His plane still shows up, but no ID.

Though that is possible, I tend to doubt it is the ADS-B equipment in his plane. I am also not seeing the tail numbers of my other friends planes that also have ADS-B out.

Do planes actually send all the info or do planes identify themselves to ATC and does ATC via ADSB transmit the available data? Possibly an ATC data issue with his ID.

The aircraft sends the info. Here where I live I have no ADSB coverage in my valley. But if you have ADSB Out I will see your N number or what ever you have programmed in to be transmitted.

I wonder if it has to do with the GDL88 configuration. The GTX345 is a 1090 solution while the GDL88 it a 978 solution.

If your friend is 1090 equipped, is it possible your GDL88 isn't triggering a 'full' report from his airplane?

If you fly someplace that ATC provides ADS-R, do you see his tail number?
If you fly near a lot of other traffic so that those aircraft trigger a full report, do you see his tail number?

If so, I don't know if it is possible, but if the GDL88 can be configured to report that you have both 978 and 1090 IN, maybe that will fix the problem.

Thank You for the replies.

My friend’s plane has a GTX 330 w/extended squitter upgrade for ADS-B Out which always worked well in the past.

Yes, that was my thought too with regard to the GDL 88 being a 978 frequency unit.

The GTX 345 is a dual-frequency (978 and 1090), plus Mode S - TIS traffic (which works in large metropolitan areas) as well.

Guessing the GDL 88 may not be as capable at receiving Air-to-Air as the GTX 345. Then again, maybe that shouldn’t matter. The GDL 88 Out is 978. The IN shouldn’t be as limited, unless the 978 frequency isn’t as good at indicating you have an approved OUT to trigger the function of the IN, so far as I know...maybe someone else knows for sure???

Flying over ONT (Ontario International Airport, 40 miles east of Los Angeles) my system was picking up tail numbers of the airliners on the ramp (aircraft on ground are colored brown on the display).

Of course, I should also be receiving IN through my GDL 39 Portable Unit as well. That unit might function better if I hook it (the GDL 39) to the former DME antenna attached to the bottom of my plane...

Thread drift warning-------

Anybody have any idea why a Texan II wouldn't show up at all on ADSB-in/GTX345/iPad?

I visually saw one leave the pattern the other day, but never saw a hint of it on my iPad, though I was seeing other targets normally. I didn't think of a TEX2 as a stealth aircraft. I even heard ATC assign a squawk and say "radar contact".

Guessing it isn’t a perfect system (with regard to the Texan II aircraft involved). Military aircraft, even Stealth types, do have the ability to be seen/tracked by ATC when they want to be seen.

In contrast, I have seen aircraft tail numbers displayed, for aircraft which I’m pretty sure do not yet have ADS-B equipment (other friends I know).

Not sure as to function, but that may involved aircraft with Mode S, TIS identification, which gets sent to ATC and relayed/rebroadcast back over the ADS-B system...

The GDL88 is dual frequency IN, so it should pick up your friend's GTX 330ES
