This Friday I'm flying from Houston to Asheville, NC to pick up my son and then the two of us are going to Orlando for the weekend to eat too much at the Food & Wine Festival at Epcot. On FltPlan.com, one of the routes they propose is SPA J53 CRG J45 OMN BITHO.BITHO7. I'm still fairly new to IFR (got the rating in March), and I had not seen a "J" like this before. There is nothing on the charts between those VORs with those designations. What are "J53" and "J45"? :help:

Have any of you filed IFR from KAVL to KISM? The route proposed on FltPlan.com adds about 6% more to the route. What I came up with is OCF.LEESE2, which only adds about 3% and still keeps me out of the restricted areas. Any chance they'll let me have this route?

The "J" stands for Jet route or high ALT airway. I flew from HOU, actully Bay City Non-stop direct, to HDI (cleveland TN) No problem. We departed Houston VFR cleared the airspace then picked up the IFR about 30min north and got a direct route at 7000.. OBTW HDI is about 35-45 min from Ashville.

I know the Florida area well and fly there all the time. My son goes to schools at Elon so I’m also familiar with NC. If you are G/ equipped, I would file CRG, OMN direct. Once you get to OMN they are going to vector you into KISM so no need to get overly complicated. The BITHO.BITHO7 is an Orlando STAR which normally is given to the big boys so I doubt that you get it. Just in case, read up on it before you get there.

If you are not G/ equipped, the suggested routing below will work and it’s very scenic. Good flight!!

Martin,

If you want to fly OCF.LEESE2 I would just put OCFand direct and they will vector you the rest of the way. Again, LEESE2 is a STAR and I rarely get those in Florida it’s usually for the heavy iron.

I've done that exact flight.

Only issue I ran into was the airspace around KISM. It's a busy area and they route you everywhere.

Marty,

Just file direct. (The "J" routes are for high altitude planes.) You will probably get direct, then later, some vectors and/or re-routes in central Florida. It will not be difficult...Just be ready to copy and comply approx. abeam JAX.

J-- indicates a High Altitude Route which are only valid above FL180.

I prefer filing the STAR so I am expecting it and when I get vectored off of it its no big deal. The converse always happens when I don't file and now I'm scrambling trying to read a STAR, get weather, study my approach, all while planning my descent (and remembering to switch back to the mains)

Marty,

We will be heading over on Sunday or Monday.

We go to KISM alot, and have never had any difficulty. In fact, Orlando is probably the most user friendly Class B I have flown in. If you are talking to approach, you can transit the Disney TFR and will in fact get vectored down low right down Main Street USA on the way into KISM. It's outstanding. I highly recommend KAZ Aviation at KISM. Ask for JP.

Have fun at Epcot.

Drew

I second KAZ but call ahead and see if they've got their fuel shipment yet. Two weeks ago they were out but could get Signature to bring some over at a reduced rate.

FWIW we have always had good experiences with Atlantic @ KISM and getting in and out had never been a problem as mentioned in the other posts.

We stopped in for the EPCOT Food & Wine festival a couple of weeks ago. Good times!

i always file direct, why should i bother with all the complicated routes and STARS. nice thing is fltplan.com will email you the ATC assigned route well in advance so not many surprises when you call clr. del.

was at KISM a couple weeks ago and can't say enough good things about jet center. if you're buying a lot of petro they beat everyone else by a mile and service is top notch. i've also talked to everyone else on the field about hangar space last week and i wish i could say something negative about any of them, but can't. they were all very responsive and easy to deal with, even when i told them they were too high on their rent.

it sounds like a winner for pilots: 4 FBO's trying to out-do each other with excellent service...what a concept.
