For you folks that have noticed that the GOES-East sat images are centered much further west than they have been, things are about to return to normal.

On December 16, GOES-12 had a thruster leak, evidently the same sort of thing that happened a year ago. They got GOES-13 (an in-orbit backup) into service pretty quickly thereafter. GOES-12 is at 75 West Longitude, GOES-13 at 105 W.

Around 15Z on January 6 NOAA plans to bring GOES-12 back on line, assuming recovery operations Monday and Tuesday are successful.

If that works, the "GOES-East" images will be more "east" than centered on Texas.

Looks like they got it fixed. Vis, IR, and water vapor maps are all now from 75 West (GOES-12).
